What do I need before I can get my permit?

Before you apply for your learner’s instruction permit, the State of Alaska requires each person to do the following:

• The applicant must be able to pass the written knowledge test.
• The applicant must be able to pass a vision test.
• The applicant must pay a fee of $15.00 for an original or duplicate permit and $5.00 for a renewal permit.

Alaska learner’s instruction permits are valid for a period of two years from the date they were issued. Any driver who has a learner’s permit from another state will be required to obtain an Alaska learner’s instruction permit before they can legally drive in the State.
