What are the requirements to apply for my driving permit?

In the State of Colorado you must be at least 15 years and 6 months old before you can apply for a driver’ education or driver’s awareness permit. Outlined below are the requirements that must be met by the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV):

Driver’s Education Permit
• You must be between the ages of 15 and 15 and a half years old.
• You must provide proof that you have completed and passed a State-approved driver education course within six months prior to applying for your permit. The 30 hours of classroom study can be done in a classroom or completed over the Internet.
• You must present an Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship also known as a DR2460 form.
• Your permit will be valid for a period of three years from the date it was issued.

Driver’s Awareness Permit
• You must be between the ages of 15 and a half and 16 years old.
• You must provide documentation that shows you have completed a State approved four-hour “Driver Awareness Program”.
• You must hold the permit for a twelve months minimum before applying for a Colorado driver’s license.
• You must present an Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship also known as a DR2460 form.
• Your permit will be valid for a period of three years from the date it was issued.
• You can choose to take a driver education course instead of the four-hour Driver Awareness Program but you must complete behind-the-wheel training before a driver’s license will be issued.

Minor Instruction Permit
• You must be between the ages of 16 and 21 years old.
• Minors who are under 18 must have the permit for twelve months minimum before applying for a Colorado driver’s license.
• Your permit will be valid for a period of three years from the date it was issued.
