Indiana BMV Motorcycle Test: What You Need to Know

Rising costs of fuel have made it more expensive than ever to own and drive a car.  For some, riding a motorcycle is a good choice.  Motorcycles use significantly less gas than cars and cost less to maintain; they are also suitable for recreational use either on or off road.  In the state of Indiana, a motorcycle endorsement is required to ride a motorcycle legally.  To obtain a motorcycle endorsement, a person must have a valid Indiana driver's license and be at least 15 years old.  Parental consent is required if the driver is under 18 years of age.

To obtain a motorcycle endorsement, an applicant must have a motorcycle learner's permit and complete a motorcycle safety course; or he or she must pass the Indiana BMV motorcycle test.  This test has 25 questions; the minimum passing score is 80%, so at least 20 of the questions must be answered correctly.  He or she must also pass a visual screening and present documents proving his or her identification, Social Security number and Indiana residency.  The state of Indiana requires that a helmet and eye protection be worn at all times when operating a motorcycle.

Riding a motorcycle can be a great alternative to driving a car for many people.  With a few extra precautions, a motorcycle can be a safe, economical way to get around.  Obtaining a motorcycle endorsement is a simple process.  The Indiana BMV motorcycle test is not difficult or expensive.  Having the motorcycle endorsement gives a driver an added dimension of flexibility.
