About the Alabama DPS Written Test
Commonly Asked Questions?
Alabama residents who are ready to take the tests for their driver’s license may have common questions to ask before attempting the written exam. They may wish to know who must take the written exam, or if there are special allowances for those with difficulties. Someone who is nervous may wish to know how soon he may take the test again if he fails. Still another person may be seeking answers to questions about motorcycles or regarding a commercial driver’s license.
How Old do you have to be to take the permit tests?
Alabama allows those who are 15 years of age, with proof that they are enrolled in school, to take the written test to receive their learner’s permit. For those over this age, and not previously licensed, the written test is also required. For others, Alabama specifies that for those moving from another State, whose licenses have not been expired more than one year, a written exam is not required; if the license has been expired more than one year, a written exam is required. For residents renewing an Alabama license, a written test is not required, unless the license has been expired more than three years. Alabama has no special renewal procedures for elderly drivers.
How is the Test Administered
Alabama uses automated testing equipment to administer a 30 question written test. Applicants must answer 24 questions correctly to pass. For the hearing impaired, the equipment may administer the test in American Sign Language. The equipment can also administer oral exams to those who are unable to read or comprehend the written test. Alabama has no limit on how many times an applicant may fail, and those who do may take the written test twice in one day by paying an additional fee. Applicants are encouraged to take practice tests before actually testing, in order to help them pass their first attempt and save money.
What about Motorcycle Permits?
An applicant seeking a Motorcycle license or endorsement must be at least 14, with proof that he is enrolled in school. He must then pass a written test specific to motorcycles, as well as the learner’s license examination.
What do CDL / Commercial drivers Need to know?
For those in search of a Commercial Drivers License, Alabama adheres to Federal Law as written in the 49CFR. Applicants should expect a minimum of 30 questions on the General Knowledge portion of the exam, but understand that there may be more questions. A passing score is 80%. Each endorsement will require additional testing. The Hazardous Materials Endorsement test is taken at each licensing renewal, every four years.
