About the California DMV Written Test
All drivers in the state of California are required to have insurance. Teen drivers may be listed under their parent’s car insurance but rates may vary. Teen or new drivers who need to be on their own Insurance policy should always check their rates. New drivers tend to save the most when switching between insurance companies. So go ahead and Find the best rates!
California requires a written test for any person seeking a license within the State. This includes those who are getting a license for the first time, those who are renewing their license, and those who are transferring a license from another State or from a foreign country. The difference is in how many questions the applicant must answer. Elderly drivers, like other residents, are also required to retake the written test when renewing their license.
In California, those who are between 15 ½ and 17 ½ seeking their learner’s permit must take a 46 question test, of which 39 must be answered correctly. Applicants 18 years of age and older, seeking a license for the first time, must answer a 36 question test, of which 30 must be answered correctly. Those renewing their license must answer 15 out of 18 questions correctly to pass. Please note, for those renewing their license, that according to the Driver manual, you will be informed in advance by mail if you are required to take a written test to renew your license. The test is a handwritten, multiple choice test. There is no limit to how many times the test may be attempted, but each failed attempt requires a seven day waiting period for retesting. Those seeking a license for motorcycles must pass an additional knowledge test covering driving rules aimed specifically at these vehicles. It is strongly encouraged that applicants take practice tests before applying to take these written tests in order to avoid the seven day waiting period.
