South Carolina Motorcycle Permit Practice Test FAQs:

What questions are on the South Carolina motorcycle permit test?

The SCDMV motorcycle permit exam covers everything in the DMV motorcycle operator’s handbook. Expect questions on proper clothing and safety equipment, emergency procedures, sharing the road with motorists, how to stay visible, and more.

How many times can I take the SCDMV motorcycle exam?

You can take the motorcycle license test with the South Carolina DMV up to three times. If you fail on your third attempt, you’ll need to take and pass a motorcycle safety course in order to earn your SC motorcycle license.

What’s the difference between a motorcycle permit test and a regular permit test?

A motorcycle permit exam is an additional knowledge test required to earn a motorcycle endorsement on your driver’s license. It will ask questions specific to becoming a motorcycle rider, while the regular permit test (required for all South Carolina drivers) pertains to general rules of the road for all vehicle types.

How do I earn my South Carolina motorcycle license?

To earn your South Carolina motorcycle endorsement on your license, you must be at least 16 years old; if you’re at least 15 years old, you can apply for a motorcycle beginner’s permit. All drivers under 18 years old must first obtain the permit; if you’re 18 or older, you can take the required exams without having first gotten a motorcycle permit, but you will NOT be allowed to prepare and practice riding without one.

All motorcycle applicants must pass a written knowledge test specific to motorcycles, as well as an on-cycle road skills exam, before earning a South Carolina motorcycle endorsement. However, if you take a South Carolina motorcycle safety course, the DMV exams are waived, and the Department will accept your test certificate showing you’ve passed the required course exams.
