In the State of California, you must be at least 15 and a half years old but under the age of 18 to apply for a provisional instruction permit. Applicants must do the following: • Visit the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office or make an appointment with the DMV for quicker service. • Complete application form DL 44 and submit the original. Copies will not be accepted. • The applicant’s parents or legal guardians must sign the DL 44 form. • Have your thumbprint taken. • Have your picture taken. • Provide proof of legal presence and birth date. • Provide proof of legal name. • Provide proof of your Social Security number. • Pay the required fee in cash, check, money order or debit card. • Provide proof of enrollment or completion of an approved driver education or driver training program if you are between 15 ½ and 17 ½ years old. • Pass a vision test. • Pass the written exam.
