What are the requirements to apply for my driving permit?

The State of Kansas has the following requirements for obtaining an instruction permit:

• You must be at least 14 years old.
• You must be able to pass a written exam.
• You must be able to pass a vision test.
• You must provide written consent from your parent or legal guardian if age 14 or 15.

Applicants who provide a certificate of completion from an approved driver’s education course do not need to take the written exam. Teen drivers who have an instruction permit from another state still need to apply for a Kansas instruction permit.

Farm Permits
• You must be at least 14 years old but less than 16.
• You must be able to pass a written test.
• You must be able to pass a vision test.
• You must be able to pass a driving test or provide a certificate of completion from an approved driver education course.
• You must provide a farm affidavit.
• You must provide written consent from your parent or legal guardian.

Less Restricted Farm Permit Privileges
• You must be at least 16 years old but less than 17.
• You must be able to pass a vision test.
• You must be able to pass a driving test or provide a certificate of completion from an approved driver education course.
• You must submit a 50 hour affidavit.
• You must hold the permit for six months or until age 17, whichever occurs first
