North Carolina Permit Practice Test FAQs:

What questions are on the North Carolina permit test?

The North Carolina DMV written permit test features questions based on topics found within the DMV driver’s manual. Expect to answer questions on sharing the road, following distances, speed limits, pavement markings, and more.

What’s the difference between a North Carolina permit test and a North Carolina license test?

In North Carolina, you must first earn an instruction permit before you can earn a driver’s license if you’ve never been licensed anywhere before. The North Carolina permit test is a written knowledge exam showing that you’ve learned enough to start practicing driving under supervision. The license test comes after you’ve practiced driving, and is a practical (i.e., behind-the-wheel) road exam where you demonstrate that you are a safe and responsible driver.

How do I earn my North Carolina learner’s permit?

To earn your North Carolina learner’s permit, you must be at least 15 years old and pass a written general knowledge exam on North Carolina traffic laws. If you’re under 18 years old, you’ll need to hold your permit for at least 1 year, be at least 16 years old, and complete both a driver’s education course and at least 60 hours of driving practice before you can take the road test for your North Carolina driver’s license. Applicants who are at least 18 are not required to earn a permit first, but if you wish to practice driving in any way before taking the road test, the learner’s permit is necessary.
