WHAT TO BRING TO THE DMV

Who doesn't hate visiting the DMV? Long wait times. Tedious forms. Strict guidelines. Worse than having to visit the DMV once, is having to revisit it because you forgot an important document or form the first time. We've compiled a quick checklist of the most common documents that you typically need to bring with you to the DMV. Remember before you visit the DMV to check the wait times online to avoid as much as possible a long wait time. 

A COMPLETED APPLICATION

This one seems obvious, but it’s easy to forget. If you’re visiting the DMV, most likely you will need to bring some kind of completed application. Make sure you have the right form, and you have all the necessary signatures.

PHOTO IDENTIFICATION

You will need to prove your identity no matter what your purpose at the DMV. The easiest photo I.D. will be your license or permit. A state-issued identification card or a U.S. passport is permissible at most DMVs as well.  

PROOF OF YOUR LEGAL PRESENCE IN THE UNITED STATES

Some DMVs for certain purposes may require you bring with you proof of your legal presence in the U.S. To meet this requirement, you may need to bring your U.S. passport and/or your birth certificate. 

SOCIAL SECURITY CARD

Some DMVs only need you to give them your Social Security number; others accept a photocopy and some need proof of your Social Security Card. 

PROOF OF YOUR ADDRESS

To prove your address you can bring a credit card statement, a utility bill, or a bank statement. 

CASH

Most DMVs accept credit cards, but remember to bring cash just in case.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS 

Depending on why you’re visiting the DMV and what location you choose, you will need to bring additional documents with you like a smog certification, your vehicle’s title and registration information, an odometer reading and/ or a bill of sale.

Remember to always check the DMV website to make sure you have all the necessary documentation. Bring with you a folder or envelope sleeve to keep all your documents together. It’s very easy as you’re shuffling through your papers to lose or forget an important document.
