What do you need to know before you start applying for your Commercial Driving Permit?
When we speak of a Commercial Driver's License, we mean a driver's license required to operate large, heavy, and hazardous material vehicles for commercial purposes in the U.S. There are several types of commercial vehicles. All drivers who want to drive commercially must pass a General Knowledge Test. There are also instances when a driver must obtain special endorsements before acquiring a valid CDL. In all cases, a driver will start with a written General Knowledge test before getting a valid CDL Permit.
What's on the CDL General Knowledge Test?
The General Knowledge Test is multiple-choice. Expect 50 multiple choice questions for the written General Written Knowledge Test, which is compulsory for everyone. You must score at least 40 out of 50 questions correct (80% or higher) for the 60 minutes allowed for the Test. Most of the topics included in these tests range from pre-trip inspection, driver communication, dangers of driving under the influence of drugs, and the general trucking knowledge required before getting behind those wheels, etc. If taking tests isn't your strong suit, you might find it hard to pass the CDL test. Who Needs to take the Commercial General Knowledge Test?
All CDL Permit applicants will have to take the General Written Knowledge Test regardless of the CDL class they need to get. However, it might not be the only written test you have to take; for example, if you need to drive a Class A tractor-trailer with combination trailers, you will have to take the Combination Test. Not all applicants need this.
What Do You Need to have ready to take the Test?
There are a couple of things that you need to have ready before taking these tests.

- Proof Of Identity
- Social Security number verification
- Proof of United States Residency
- Complete Medical Exam, With Examiner's Certificate form
