It is recommended for anyone age 14 or older who wants to obtain an Alaska learner’s instruction permit attend a driver training or defensive driving course. Some of the skills you will learn while taking a formal driver’s training course include:
• Starting the vehicle
• Using the accelerator and braking system
• Parallel parking
• Parking on a hill
• Changing lanes
• Negotiating an intersection
• Traffic lights and signals
• Right of way for pedestrians and vehicles
• Making right and left-hand turns
The roads in Alaska have some challenging conditions that can be attributed to ice, rain, snow and mud. You may even have to learn how to avoid some of the local wildlife on such as bears or moose that commonly appear on Alaskan roads.
