How do I earn my Texas driver’s license?

To earn your Texas driver’s license, you must be at least 16 years old. Depending on your age, you must also either complete a state-approved driver education course (for teens under 18 years old) or a 6-hour adult driver education course (for adults 18 through 24 years old).

If you’re 25 or older, you aren’t required to complete any state-mandated education course before applying for a driver’s license. All drivers must pass a written knowledge exam and a behind-the-wheel road test.

Additionally, teens under 18 years old must first hold a Texas learner’s permit for at least 6 months and complete at least 30 hours of supervised driving practice before taking the behind-the-wheel road exam.
