The California Drivers License Test: What You Need to Know

As part of earning your drivers permit and CA drivers license, you'll need to take and pass a theory test that demonstrates your understanding of road rules and traffic safety. It's important to take a DMV practice test so that you're prepared for the real thing!

Important Topics

The California Department of Motor Vehicles has several sample tests available so that potential drivers can study the materials and get ready to ace the real exam on the first attempt. The CA DMV practice test helps you get familiar with the material on the test as well as the structure of the test itself.

The test consists of multiple choice questions that are derived from the state driver's handbook. If you study this book in addition to taking the practice tests, you'll be ready to pass it! You'll need to correctly answer 38 out of 46 questions.

The test is so much more than recognizing road signs. In this test, you'll be asked to assess hypothetical situations and mark what you think is the best response. For example, you may have to choose what to do if you need to turn left onto a one-way street. You may be asked how and when you can cross a double yellow line to pass another vehicle. By estimating your response to scenarios like these, the DMV can assess whether or not you are ready to receive a permit or a license. In addition to the written test, you'll also need to pass a vision exam. Once you've completed your driver's education, you will be expected to pass a practical driving test.

Passing the written test will ensure that you have a great foundational knowledge of the rules of the road. Good luck!

California DMV Sample Test Questions

A DUI conviction will remain on your DMV record for:
  • 10 years.
  • 5 years.
  • 20 years.
  • The rest of your life.
  • The time the conviction remains on your record depends on how many offenses you have had.
As a precaution, while driving in high winds:
  • All of the listed answers are correct.
  • Reduce your speed. Slowing down gives better control over your vehicle.
  • Keep your grip and hand position on your steering wheel firm.

  • Remain alert. Keep an eye on the road ahead.
Horse-drawn vehicles and riders of horses or other animals:
  • Are entitled to share the road with motor vehicles.
  • Are required to yield to other motor vehicles in all situations.
  • Aren't allowed on public roads whatsoever.
  • None of the listed answers are correct.
If you are driving slowly on a two-lane highway or road where passing is unsafe, and 5 or more vehicles are following you, you should:
  • Merge into a special turnout lane to let them pass you.
  • Accelerate to put distance between you and the other vehicles.
  • Do nothing.
  • Pull onto the shoulder.
  • None of the listed answers are correct.
If you find yourself in another vehicle's blind spot:
  • Drop back or pass the vehicle as quickly as you can.

  • Sound your horn loudly so they are aware of your presence.
  • None of the listed answers are correct.
