Who said getting your Georgia driver’s license is hard? It doesn’t have to be with practice tests like the Georgia teen permit test and the Georgia new-to-state driver’s license test. These practice tests make the written Georgia DDS exam easier.

How To Get A Georgia Driver’ License
Driving is a fun, convenient, and—in many places—necessary way to get around, but the right to climb behind the wheel is not guaranteed.
In order to legally pilot a vehicle in Georgia, you’ll have to prove to the state that you have the knowledge and skills necessary to safely get around.
The process looks different, depending on how old you are, and the type of vehicle you want to drive. But below are a few of the easiest ways to obtain your Georgia driver’s license.
Georgia Driver’s License (Under 18 Years Old)
If you’re younger than 18 years old, you’ll have to start with a learner’s permit.
You can begin the Georgia learner’s permit process once you turn 15.
Georgia Learner’s Permit
The first step toward getting your GA learner’s permit is scheduling an appointment with the Department of Driver Services (DDS) to take your knowledge test.
The test itself consists of two 20-question sections, about road rules and road signs.
After passing the test, you’ll have to:
- Provide proof of your:
- Identity.
- Lawful status in the U.S.
- Georgia address.
- School enrollment.
- Pass a vision exam.
- Have a parent, legal guardian, or authorized driving instructor:
- Sign forms on your behalf.
- Prove their relationship to you.
- Have your photo taken.
- Pay the Georgia learner’s permit fee.
At that point, you’ll be issued your GA learner’s permit. This will ONLY allow you to drive with passengers who are:
- At least 21 years old.
- Fully licensed.
- Physically capable of taking control of the car.
- Sitting in the passenger’s seat.
You’ll have to practice on your learner’s permit for a minimum of 12 months and 1 day before you can move on to the next step.
Georgia Class D Provisional License
To turn your permit into a provisional license, you’ll first have to complete several educational courses, including:
- An Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP/eADAP).
AND
Once enough time has passed and you’ve completed the courses, you can schedule another appointment, either with the DDS or a certified third-party tester for your driving skills test.
At this appointment, make sure to bring:
- Your GA learner’s permit.
- Proof of your:
- Identity.
- Georgia residence.
- Lawful status in the United States.
- School enrollment.
- Certificate of your Driver’s Ed course completion.
- Certificate of your ADAP completion.
- A parent, legal guardian, or authorized driving instructor to:
- Sign paperwork for you.
- Bring paperwork proving their relationship to you.
- The Georgia provisional license fee.
Once you pass the test and complete all the paperwork, the state will issue you a provisional license.
This license is valid until you turn 21. Restrictions include:
- No driving between midnight and 5 a.m.
- For the first 6 months, driving with immediate family only.
- For the second 6 months, only one passenger under age 21.
- Does not apply to immediate family members.
- After the first year, up to 3 passengers under age 21.
- Does not apply to immediate family.
Georgia Class C (Full) License
Once you turn 18, you’ll be eligible to upgrade your provisional license.
You can complete the process by:
- Using the GA DDS online services portal.
OR
- Making an appointment with the GA DDS.
Georgia Driver’s License (Age 18 or Older)
If you’re 18 or older and applying for your first Georgia license, the process is a bit streamlined.
You won’t have to first get your permit, and can begin the process right away by scheduling an appointment with the Georgia DDS. It’s possible to take both your knowledge test and road skills test at this appointment.
At the appointment, after passing the tests, you’ll also have to:
- Provide proof of your:
- Identity.
- Georgia address.
- Lawful status in the United States.
- Pass a vision test.
- Have your photo taken.
- Pay the appropriate fee.
You’ll then be issued your Georgia Class C driver’s license. There are no restrictions.
Transferring an Out-of-State License to Georgia
Transferring your out-of-state license is easy in Georgia.
Simply schedule an appointment with the GA DDS and:
- Surrender your old license.
- Pass a vision exam.
- Have your photo taken.
- Pay the appropriate fee.
You’ll then be issued your Georgia driver’s license.
